Green is the new trend in Kitchens & Baths in the Gulf

With growing concerns over global warming, greenhouse gases and depleting ozone levels, discerning consumers in the region have become more environmentally aware, as have contractors and developers who are beginning to incorporate eco-friendly options into residential apartments and villas in the Gulf.
"Green trends in kitchen and baths are gaining popularity in the region, as manufacturers are making the green migration," said Eckhard Pruy, CEO of Epoc Messe Frankfurt, organizers of ISH Kitchen and Bath Middle East, the region's leading design showcase and conference for kitchens and bathrooms

He noted that eco friendly designs are practical and help consumers save financially through energy conserving appliances without losing any creature comforts.
With an increase in environmental awareness and a widespread effort to 'go green,' contractors are finding ways to integrate more eco-friendly products into homes including, products made from recycled goods or natural sustainable materials, fittings and mixers that utilize less water and appliances that require less power.
Bamboo as a raw material used in kitchens is gaining popularity. "Bamboo is an easily renewable resource, and the right material for eco conscious consumers. It is the fastest growing plant in the world and grows naturally and requires very little water or fertilizers for sustainable harvesting," remarked Alysia Gilligan, Senior Show Manager, ISH Kitchen and Bath Middle East.
Authentic bronze, copper and stone products are also gaining in popularity for both baths and kitchens as concrete and cast stone are losing out to granite, marble onyx and travertine.
A variety of hard-to-find and aesthetically pleasing kitchen and bath products will be on display at the forthcoming ISH Kitchen and Bath Middle East that is scheduled to take place at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre from May 25 to 27.
Eco-savvy products made from recycled and ecologically sustainable and renewable materials will be showcased by leading manufacturers, wholesalers and distributors to kitchen and bathroom retailers, kitchen and bathroom designers, architects, design consultants, design engineers, property developers, construction companies and contractors.
"The green movement is gradually gaining in momentum in the region as consumers and developers in the Gulf begin to understand and accept their responsibilities as part of the global community," added Ms. Gilligan. Companies such as Grohe consider sustainability and the environment a priority and with the design and development of every new product this is taken into consideration. Kohler, another well known international supplier of kitchen and bath fixtures is committed to the creation of technologies and products that help conserve water without scarifying performance or design.
Green buildings are using far less energy and water than conventional buildings and now include commercial buildings, schools, universities, public buildings, health care institutions, housing, retail, hospitality, interior design and property management.
ISH Kitchen and Bath Middle East is the only design-led kitchen and bathroom exhibition in the Middle East, attracting key designers and manufacturers from around the world who come to present new products, interact with industry peers and source state-of-the-art market trends.

Stone Industry Gathering Life-Cycle Data

Study to assess life-cycle impacts of building stone

Like a handful of other natural building materials, stone is coveted both by high-end buyers wanting to make a statement about luxury and timelessness and by environmentally conscious buyers who are attracted to material cut straight from the earth. There is very little data available, however, to rigorously evaluate the environmental impacts of processed natural stone as a building material.

Hired by the Natural Stone Council, a collaboration of the nation’s major stone trade associations, the Center for Clean Products and Clean Technologies at the University of Tennessee–Knoxville has embarked on a three-year research project to gather information and data supporting life-cycle assessment of natural stone in buildings. “BEES has nothing on stone,” said Jack Geibig, PE, director of the center, referring to Building for Environmental and Economic Sustainability, the software tool from the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology that assesses economic and environmental performance through a product’s whole life cycle. “There is just no information on any of these products out there,” he explained, “and the stone industry recognized they wanted to be more informed and they wanted to engage in an honest way with the green building industry.”

John Mattke, president of Cold Spring Granite Company, based in
Minnesota, and a representative of the Natural Stone Council and its environmental committee, said that the group initiated its research due to the growing influence of the green building movement. “Member companies want to market to green buildings, but they’re not quite sure what to do,” he said, also noting that “the majority of architects that we talked to feel that the product is green, but they don’t have such a great perception of the extraction process.”

The research team is visiting a variety of quarries to familiarize itself with the industry and to begin to develop environmental and economic benchmarks. It will also survey the more than 1,000 companies who participate in the Natural Stone Council through its various trade association collaborators. The survey will collect data on water and energy consumption, yields from raw material, recyclability, and other measures that will feed life-cycle assessments. Later in the project, the research team will collect data on transportation energy use and develop information on the natural stone supply chain: where stone is extracted, how it is transported, where and how it is processed, and where it is sold. The team will also conduct life-cycle assessments comparing building stone with other materials in applications such as exterior fa?ades. Data developed through the research will be available for tools such as BEES.

Although “the quarrying really concerned me,” Geibig said that so far, “I’m incredibly impressed with the quarrying operations I’ve seen.” While noting its impacts, such as habitat loss and energy consumption, both Geibig and Mattke distinguish stone quarrying, in which large blocks of stone are removed from the earth, from aggregate quarrying and mining. The latter tend to take place on a much greater scale, and mining in particular often concentrates certain elements, creating toxic byproducts and runoff.

The research is funded by the Natural Stone Council, but Geibig stressed that his team is working independently to serve an industry eager for an honest assessment. “We have ambitious goals,” he said, but “we’ve had broad and overwhelming support.”

Coverings 2007 Continues Tradition

For the fourth consecutive year, Coverings exhibitors have teamed with Tile Partners for Humanity (TPFH), donating tons of excess tile, stone, adhesives and other valuable materials that will benefit Habitat for Humanity projects. In fact, three trailer trucks were loaded with approximately 50 pallets of goods by volunteers from Freeman, the service contractor for Coverings, and headed out from McCormick Place Convention Center destined both for actual installation in Chicago projects as well as for sale in the Northern Fox Valley Habitat for Humanity Restore where it will generate revenue directly funding Habitat. This represents the first time the Chicago-area affiliate is the beneficiary because Coverings has been held in Orlando for the past three years since the initiative was undertaken.
"The response and involvement of so many of the 1200 Coverings exhibitors to Tile Partners for Humanity is exceedingly generous," said Tamara Christian, CEO of National Trade Productions, which manages and produces the annual expo and conference. It is heard from our exhibitors that this is a program they heartily endorse because they feel they can say thank you to the Coverings host community in a most unique and meaningful way. Typically, exhibitors bring much more merchandise to the show as a precaution in case of damage during shipping, lost deliveries, display revisions or just to be sure they have plenty of options on hand. While it may start out as excess, it doesn’t go to waste, thanks to the true partnership forged by TPFH and the companies who exhibit.?
According to Ally Fertitta, executive director of TPFH, Coverings exhibitors are amazing partners to us and we are extremely grateful for all they contribute. This year we received whole floors, plus significant amounts of granite and marble. The community of Chicago is the richer for having Coverings return for many reasons, and this generous contribution to Habitat for Humanity definitely is one of them.
Fertitta estimates that in the four years Coverings has teamed with TPFH, materials valued at hundreds of thousands of dollars have been contributed and scores of families now have a permanent well-constructed home and roof over their heads.

Tanner quarry-blocking bills become law

Alabama Gov. Bob Riley signed into law at 8:30 a.m. today four bills that will prevent a limestone rock quarry from being built near Tanner.
The next step is to get a copy of the laws to the Limestone County Commission so it can act in stopping site preparation that has begun at Rogers Group's proposed quarry off Laughmiller Road. The company had the air and water permits needed to do such work.
"We thought the governor might have some concerns but he signed them all," Sen. Tom Butler, D-Madison, said today. "The will was expressed in the Tanner community and we worked as a team to get it all done, and the governor was that last step in that process. All of us are pleased – everybody is just tickled to death. When we get copies, we will present them to the Limestone County Commission."
Members of the Limestone County legislative delegation and several others had worked for two years to try to prevent Rogers Group from moving its existing limestone quarry from Cross Key to Laughmiller Road. The delegation includes Sen. Arthur Orr, R-Decatur; Rep. Henry White, D-Athens; Rep. Mac McCutcheon, R-Capshaw; Rep. Micky Hammon, R-Decatur and Butler.
Homeowners, developers and environmentalists opposed the location for a multitude of reasons. The four laws prevent a quarry from being built within a few miles of a school, the TVA industrial mega site, the robotics center going up at Calhoun Community College, and Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant.

Why should you prefer Granite Tiles?

If you are looking forward to a home improvement project, then enhance your interiors with durable, versatile and easy to install granite tiles.
Granite tiles are the choice of several homemakers and builders. This natural stone is not limited to a particular application. You can use it for innumerable purposes. This tiling material has the ability to outshine your kitchens, bathrooms, fireplaces, counter tops etc. Its durability, texture and finesse have made it the choice of millions.
These tiles are highly different from man-made tiles. Each tiling material differs from its counterpart. Its naturalist origin is responsible for its varied designs. However, this versatility is an advantage for builders or interior designers who can play with their creativity and design attractive household projects.
However, you should act carefully while installing the granite tiles. You can install them with help of adhesive, grout and tiling equipments. Hence, you'll just need to follow simple installation steps. These tiles are a bit heavy, hence if it is difficult to install, then you can appoint a professional for the purpose.
You should keep few things in mind while selecting the granite tiles. You should consider factors such as moisture levels, foot traffic, slip resistant, weather conditions etc. You should also make sure that the tiling surface is neat and clean without any trace of rock or debris. This insures that the tiles are properly adhered to the tiling surface.
Moreover, once you install the tiles, you should make sure that the tiles are maintained properly. Never clean them with harsh detergents or cleansers with chlorine content. These cleaners will wear out the tiles and take away their shine and shimmer. You can also appoint a professional to clean and polish your granite tiles.
These tiles are a bit expensive than other natural stone but there is no harm in investing some extra bucks towards maintaining these durable and long-lasting tiles. So, purchase granite tiles and get them installed in your kitchens, bathrooms and outdoors.

Let's be very careful with limestone mining

The near collapse of the bauxite/alumina industry, a cornerstone of the Jamaican economy, means the Government has a responsibility to seek to fill the vacuum - if only partially.
Over a period of decades, successive Jamaican governments have become dependent on revenues from bauxite/alumina. Just as importantly, thousands of people, directly and indirectly, have come to virtually take for granted the benefits of relatively high-paid jobs in the industry.
Hence the sense of siege and gloom which now prevails in bauxite-mining and alumina-processing communities and indeed right across the country, following the recent closure of three plants.
Against that backdrop, plans by the Government to expand the limestone mining sector, as part of the drive to make up for the bauxite/alumina fallout, are perfectly logical.
We note the enthusiasm for limestone mining being exhibited by minister of mining and energy, Mr James Robertson, and state minister in the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce, Mr Michael Stern.
"We don't realise we have a large deposit of limestone, we have an almost endless supply," gushes Mr Stern.
In like manner, Mr Robertson tells us that Jamaica has "at least 60 times more" limestone than bauxite reserves and that "very large quantities of this (limestone) reserve are 'mineable' and are of exceptionally good quality".
We hear of ready markets and substantial revenues for Jamaican limestone.
But like environmentalists Ms Wendy Lee and Ms Diana McCaulay, this newspaper feels the need to advise extreme caution.
To begin with, we are alarmed by the potential for 'uglification' of the Jamaican landscape. Anyone who has ever approached the Norman Manley Airport by aircraft and experienced the jarring sight of limestone mines standing out against the lush green hillsides, like so many white, open sores, should understand what we are trying to say.
We should be forgiven if, given the experience up to now of bauxite and limestone mining, we are not convinced by the assurances from Mr Robertson that a proper "balance" will be maintained.
We would strongly urge that before any large-scale expansion of limestone mining all necessary steps should be taken to determine the environmental consequences.
'Uglification' of the Jamaican landscape apart, we need to be sure of what an expanded limestone mining sector will mean for Jamaica's eco-systems; for water quality, etc. We await the considered, scientific and unemotional positions of our geological and environmental experts.
Crucially, what will it all mean for the life-giving tourism industry? No doubt our tourism leaders - not least the energetic minister Mr Edmund Bartlett - will have their say.
Bottom line: We should look very, very, very carefully before we leap.

Excessive stone mining threatens river

The banks of the Tinau River are collapsing as a result of excessive stone mining. The river has been mined for the last ten years using excavators, which has considerably increased its depth. Environmentalists say the current situation at Tinau will prove a disaster for the area if precautions are not taken soon.
Currently, three dozen excavators are extracting hundreds of truckloads of stone from the river´s 12 km length. The Water Resource Act of 1992 prohibits the use of any equipment while extracting materials from a river. The District Development Committee, who handed over the contract to extract the stone, has clearly disregarded the Act.
tinauriver.jpg
The haphazard extraction of stones has increased the river´s depth by 10 meters over the past 10 years. According to environment engineer Khetraj Dahal the depth of the river under the Tinau Bridge at the East West Mahendra Highway has also increased by a meter over the past year. Dahal says if the extraction continues, the bridge will surely collapse within the next few years.
Last year a flood in the Tinau River swept away 300 houses. Experts say if efforts aren´t made to conserve the river, it will see a fate similar to that of Koshi.
"Even if countless meetings have been held on the issue, no one is concerned with conservation," says Dahal.

Hundreds gather to protest proposed granite quarry

Hundreds of farmers, biologists, Native Americans and other ordinary citizens descended on the Riverside County government center today in an effort to derail a proposed granite quarry just half a mile from Temecula.
They told the Local Agency Formation Commission that Liberty Quarry would desecrate tribal land, pollute the air, destroy critical wildlife habitat and increase truck traffic on area roads.
The commission is expected to decide today whether to grant Temecula's request to annex the 5,000- acre site and in effect kill plans for the quarry. Commission staff has recommended that the request be denied and that the land remain in county hands.

More than 300 residents crowded into the hearing room, with several hundred others standing outside. Many wore green hats that read "ANNEX."
"For Granite Construction to rip open a mountain and gut it for 75 years and then say the quarry will have no impact is absurd," said Mike Jurkosky, who lives near the proposed site.
Others urged the commission to act for the public good, not in the interests of a private company.
Matt Rahn, who directs the Santa Margarita Ecological Reserve for San Diego State University, told officials that the quarry would cut off a critical wildlife corridor linking inland California to the coast. He also said it would threaten the Santa Margarita River, the last free-flowing river in Southern California.
"The reserve is an outdoor classroom and research center," he said. "This is how California looked 100 years ago. "
Mark Macarro, chairman of the Pechanga tribe, said annexing area would protect the place where tribal tradition says the earth was created and the tribe was born.
"This is our Eden," he said. "We cannot re-create where the world was created. There is only one Eden."
Supporters of the quarry are expected to speak this afternoon.

Quartz, the new "must-have" countertop surface

Thanks to increased manufacturer product development, quartz premium countertops are now in high demand as a must-have in new and remodeled homes and businesses throughout the country.
This trend comes as no surprise as you've probably already seen and felt quartz surfaces in homes across the country, in your local trendy coffee shops, in banks, high end restaurants, spas, salons and hotels. Quartz surfaces have been used in upscale homes around the world for more than 15 years but have more recently entered the American market in grandiose fashion.
"Quartz surfaces are experiencing incredible growth which is driven by the style, luxury and durability quartz delivers," explained Mark Hanna, President of Leeza Distribution Inc., distributor of Han- Stone Fine Quartz Surfaces.
According to the recent Freedonia Group Report on countertop industry trends, there has been a definite shift in the marketplace over the last few years as quartz has become the fastest growing market segment in the industry with 13 per cent growth compared to granite's five per cent.
Quartz has become the elegant answer for those who love the look of granite but are concerned about its drawbacks. Unlike granite, which can be permanently stained by cooking oils and grease, or etched by the acids in common household products, quartz is resistant to these stain hazards.
"Quartz surfaces are growing in popularity because they have the appearance of natural stone, but unlike granite, these surfaces never need to be sealed," Hanna said. Quartz is a non-porous material, which means it will not promote the growth of mold, mildew or bacteria. This is why our HanStone surfaces are certified NSF 51 (with the National Sanitation Foundation)." Also of great importance, HanStone is accredited with Greenguard environmental certification.
And while granite is subject to unpredictable variations in color or pattern between slabs, making matching of sections of countertops difficult, quartz, is an engineered stone which is consistent in color pattern and texture.
Quartz (Silicon Dioxide) is the most common mineral on the earth's surface. It is present in nearly every geological environment and is a component of almost every rock type and exists in an impressive range of varieties of patterns and colors.
Quartz countertops are manufactured with up to 93 percent quartz and seven percent pigments and resins. This prescribed mixture results in a product that is non-porous, exceedingly durable, and more than twice as strong as granite.
The top rated quartz surface in the industry by designers, architects and developers a like is HanStone because it contains a higher quartz content than the norm and includes clear and multiple quartz colors bringing greater depth, dimension and style to its surfaces.
"HanStone is the ideal surface because it offers extraordinary beauty with twice the strength and durability of granite," explained Hanna. HanStone allows the design flexibility you need with 32 dramatic colors, vibrant patterns and a more luxurious sheen. It can be used in virtually any indoor surface application in kitchen and bathrooms, including floors, countertops, island tops and back-splashes.

The history of sawing granite

Although early metalsmiths learned how to increase the hardness of copper, granite was still over four times as hard. The very hard sand particles imbedded themselves in the copper blade and were dragged across the surface of the stone, abrading and wearing it down along the narrow kerf. In the process, the copper blade was also worn down and eventually had to be replaced.
Stone saw technology passed to Ancient Greece and then to the Roman Empire, shifting to iron and water-powered saws.
Perhaps the earliest stone sawing in Vermont occurred in the early 1800s at Dr. Judd's marble works in Middlebury, using soft iron blades with sand and water abrasive. The swinging frame gang saw was later introduced in Rutland for sawing marble. At its peak, the Vermont Marble Co. had 63 gang saws running day and night at their Sutherland Falls mills.
Rowland E. Robinson recalls a visit to this mill. "The sawing-mill is not a cheerful place. Dampness pervades it, and under the low roof stretch the long dim vistas, ending in gloom, between the gangs of incessantly swinging saws. The machinery growls and hisses as it gnaws the stone like some monstrous beast in its den over its prey, and hardly another sound is heard."
Lincoln Iron Works and F.R. Patch Manufacturing Co., both of Rutland, were the major suppliers of gang saws to the marble industry and later to the granite industry.
The gang saw was typically the first stop for granite from the quarry, cutting a quarry block into slabs ranging from a few inches to a foot or more in thickness. In 1909, Jones Brothers operated two gang saws manufactured by Lincoln Iron Works. They consisted of a reciprocating frame with six or so cutting blades. A single electric motor powered both saws via flat belts from a single overhead shaft. Jones Brothers fabricated their own saw blades from 16-foot by 16-inch steel blanks. A pattern with notches about 2-inch wide, 3 to 4-inches deep, and spaced 4-inches was used to mark notches on the steel which were then cut out with an acetylene torch. Blades would last about a month in continuous use.
The gang saws usually ran 24 hours per day with two-man crews. They were noisy machines C making dragging and screeching sounds that could be heard a mile or more from the shed.
In the late 1800s, chilled iron (and later steel) shot abrasive greatly increased the sawing rate. After sawing was complete, each slab was separated, chained, laid down and acid washed to prevent rust staining. This was an unpleasant (and probably unhealthy) job with acid fumes forming a smog cloud!
Circular blade saws were introduced in the 1860s for jointing and ripping slabs into smaller-sized pieces. The circular saw blade had either riveted-on steel tooth segments or set-in diamond tooth segments. By the turn of the 20th century, F.R. Patch Manufacturing Co. was manufacturing a gantry diamond circular saw with a 6-1/2-foot diameter blade that spun at 500 rpm.
Cook, Watkins & Patch of Barre had one of the first steel-tooth circular saws in Barre and since there were very few of these saws, they did sawing work for many other firms. The saw cut a very rough surface so afterward the surface had to be dressed with a surfacing machine.
Wire saws were introduced into Barre by the Dessureau Brothers in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The multi-wire saw with six to eight wires soon replaced the gang saw for granite slabbing since the wire cut faster, was quieter in operation, and produced a narrower and smoother-sided kerf.
The wire loop was often 4,000 feet or more in length in order to prolong the life of the wire. The loop was supported on large-diameter sheaves running in a line as much as a half mile from the shed or sometimes between a wheelhouse and tail house on the shed roof. Typically, the wire had to be changed every day or every other day.
During the late 1930s, '40s and early 50s at least 18 saw plants were established in Barre to provide sawing services for sheds without their own saws. During the 1950s, the Marr & Gordon saw plant operated a gigantic Lincoln Iron Works gang saw C reputedly the largest east of the Mississippi. Most saw plants did only sawing. A few saw plants also did polishing so they could offer polished slabs to their customers. Saw plants were quite profitable and some like the Rouleau saw plant used saved profits to later establish successful granite finishing businesses.
Before World War II, most saw plants were using gang saws and a few were also using circular saws to cut small pieces. After World War II, most saw plants changed to wire saws and finally in the 1970s to large computer-controlled circular saws with up to 13-foot diameter diamond segment edged blades. A 12-foot diameter blade has about 160 diamond segments and can saw about 15 square feet per hour. These saws run 24 hours per day, unattended during nights and weekends. The computer notifies the operator at home by telephone if there is any problem.
A look at the U.S. stone industry
The history of sawing granite

A look at the U.S. stone industry

Stonereport: How has the economic downturn affected your business?Gary Distelhorst: The U.S. stone industry is not immune to the global economic downturn. A spot survey of Marble Institute members suggests that nearly all of our member stone companies have experienced a dip in their business, which has forced most companies to tighten their belts. In fact, nearly three out of four members surveyed told us they have delayed capital investments like new machinery purchases. Many have also been forced to reduce staff.

Stonereport: How much impact has there been on machinery purchases?
Gary Distelhorst: As with every industry, our members are delaying new machinery purchases. The U.S. stone industry has significantly upgraded its technology in the past few years to improve efficiency and productivity. With the economic slowdown, our members seem comfortable using their existing machinery, or if planning to replace machinery are first investigating used equipment on the market (of which there is a huge amount). A spot survey of members suggests that about four in 10 have delayed all machinery purchases, and 85 percent have delayed at least some purchases.

Stonereport: When will the crisis end?
Gary Distelhorst: Our spot survey suggests that two out of three members believe the economy will improve next year. Obviously, a lot of our industry’s business depends on new-home construction. There are signs of improvement, but it’s too early to tell whether increased construction will be sustained. There is also the issue of a huge inventory of previously built, but unsold, new homes. In the future, newly constructed homes in the U.S. will be both more efficient and smaller.

Stonereport: What can machinery manufacturers do to help he industry?
Gary Distelhorst: Not surprisingly, nearly four out of 10 members we surveyed suggested that machinery manufacturers can help the industry by lowering costs of their equipment. But we thought it was interesting that 14 percent told us that machinery manufacturers could help the industry by providing financing for equipment purchases – and another 11 percent said machinery manufacturers should focus on making equipment more efficient.

Stonereport: What will the stone world look like after the crisis?
Gary Distelhorst: There will be somewhere in the neighborhood of 40% - 60% fewer fabrication shops, but those that remain will be more efficient and of generally higher quality, with generally higher business acumen. The industry should be stronger, but the “good old days” of 2005 and 2006 are gone forever, and natural stone fabricators will have to adjust by fabricating other materials, including engineered stone, etc. There will also be a growing commitment to customer choice and customer service.

Stonereport: How are the machinery manufacturers reacting to this change?
Gary Distelhorst: From the vantage point of the U.S. fabrication industry, it appears that the better machinery manufacturers are taking advantage of the downturn by improving machinery technology, offering better training, and are not flooding the market used heavy-handed sales tactics. Some U.S. manufacturers are aggressively trying to get the glut of used machinery out of the marketplace by actually trying to facilitate sales of such machinery.
