Marble design lives in Carrara

Fifty pieces in marble and stone, ornaments and furnishings by leading designers have been brought together in an exhibition mounted in the prestigious main hall at the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara.
“Marble/Habitat aims to show important pieces of design in a place which exalts their size, characteristics and, above all – IMM chairman Giancarlo Tonini who opened the exhibition emphasised – the great skills of the craftsmen who have turned the projects of leading designers into timeless objects of marble.”

Present at the opening of Marble/Habitat (ornaments and furnishings in natural stone from the project to the “knowhow”), were Russian and Arab architects and stone company representatives who had come to Carrara as part of the project Stone Interreg. This project was promoted by the Italian Trade Commission and seven Italian regions, including Tuscany, together with the Internazionale Marmi e Macchine, for a series of meetings with companies and authorities in the area.
The guests were met by the IMM chairman Giancarlo Tonini and managing director Paris Mazzanti and the Academy director Marco Baudinelli together with many stone company owners.

Following visits and meetings in companies, sculpture workshops and testing and research labs, the Russian and Arab guests were able to see this exhibition showing the skilful knowhow of craftsmen in the creation of furnishings and everday objects in a unique setting in the building where Tenerani and Canova once sculpted.

The stone exhibition would not have been possible without the assistance of UP Group who kindly lent their historical collection of design pieces conceived by well-known designers such as Castiglioni, De Lucchi, Di Rosa, Lazzotti, Natalini, Mari, Palterer, Sottsass jr and Thun.
