Sandstone Care

In order to make sure that sandstone looks natural, enamouring and alluring, extensive care must be taken. When used with care sandstone lasts for years and generations. Sandstone must be kept free from dust and scratches.

Sandstones vary widely in color due to minerals and clays. Sandstone is light gray to yellow or red. A dark reddish-brown sandstone, also called brownstone. Bluestone is a dense, hard, fine grain sandstone of greenish or bluish gray color.

Sandstone and other stones should be protected to prevent or minimize damage from staining. Stained surfaces are often difficult or impossible to restore. Be sure to use the appropriate neutral cleaner designed for natural stone surfaces as improper cleaners may damage the stone, tile or protective treatments.

Sandstone countertops can wither with consistent use and also get damaged if not cleaned properly on time. If you want to maintain the beauty of sandstone, its finish, texture and versatility, you should take special care.

Most people think that sandstone is a hard stone and does require no care. However, this is not true. This stone has its own weak part including its porous structure. In fact, this structure lets moisture absorption. Once this stone absorbs moisture, it can lead it to discoloration and chemical stains. These stains usually become an integral part of the stone. You need to protect the stone and take special care to clean it properly. Never ever use any type of cleanser or cleaning technique. Never ever use acidic cleaners to clean sandstone countertops. These cleaners tend to etch and remove polished surface.

Various precuation to be taken are as follows:
  • To keep sandstone dust free, dust it using a clean non-treated dry dust mop.
  • Use warm water to clean sandstone regularly using a mop or sponge.
  • The cleaner to be used should not contain acid or lemon, which can otherwise etch the surface and damage the polish and finish.
  • The cleaner used should be neutral. Do not use cleaners that contain acid such as bathroom cleaners, grout cleaners or tub and tile cleaners.
  • Care should be taken while using vacuum cleaner as the metal or the plastic attachments or the wheels may scratch the surface.
  • Do not use scouring powders or creams; these products contain abrasives that may scratch the surface.
  • Do not place hot pans directly, use trivet or mats under them.
