Cleaning Fireplace

Having a fireplace in your home can be an enjoyable experience, although we do not rely on them as a heat source as much as in the past.

Fireplaces are considered to be a centrepiece of a room because of the warmth and cosiness they add. Fireplaces are not just a charm they have a responsibility to keep everyone in your home warm.

Fireplace Maintenance Tips

Cleaning and maintaining a fireplace should be done as and when needed. When cleaning your fireplace the Chimney should be checked for damage around the edges. Check the flue for obstructions such as birds nests, and trim back any overlapping branches or large trees.

Your fireplace should be checked and cleaned on a regular basis. Inspect your fireplace to make sure that it has adequate protective lining and smoke ducts and that the chimney is clear and in good repair.

If you keep your fireplace clean and maintained you will be able to make it a better feature for your family and guests to enjoy.

Fireplace Cleaning Tips

Try using the following tips for fireplace cleaning and maintenance.

Using a toothbrush and Worcestershire sauce can keep any brass on your fireplace shiny. Brass knobs and metal doors can also be scrubbed and kept shiny.

Keeping your fire burning for longer than 5 hours can be dangerous, make sure you leave doors and windows open for ventilation.

Make sure the fire screen is closed to avoid hot ambers from falling onto your carpets or rugs. Rugs can protect your carpet but make sure to choose a rug made from a non-flammable material. Place rugs in front of your fireplace to prevent sparks from igniting any carpets or wooden floors.

Don't leave your fireplace unattended, especially when small children could be present.

Installing a chimney cap can prevent damages from water, animal nesting, or other types of debris.

If your fireplace has a firebox it will need cleaning at least once a week. During this time, keep no less then one inch of ash in the bottom. This will work as an insulation to help coals heat faster and retain heat longer.

Before you remove ash from the firebox, make sure the damper is open to draw any flying ash upwards through the chimney and not into the room. It is advised not to use a vacuum cleaner or hand brush to clean out the ash.

A brick cleaner can be used to clean up a brick fireplace.

Gas logs should be cleaned at least once a month with a soft brush. Do not clean them after a fire has been on. The excess ashes and unburned logs should be removed regularly.
